Our organization, ********** *********, was contracted with Pitney Bowes for a postage meter service. Our contract period ended in January and we requested lease termination on 2/3/25. The company has been difficult to deal with because there is no way to get in touch with a person, and they don't respond to support cases. We were able to request and receive the materials for sending back our equipment, which was delivered on 2/27/25, but there has been no acknowledgement of the return. A new invoice was issued on 2/11/25, attempting to bill us for 2/10/25-5/9/25. A second invoice was issued on 2/16/25 for property tax on the equipment we requested to return. A help case was submitted on 3/13/25 asking to void the invoices, which is still awaiting response. We just want our account closed out at this point.Business Response

Hello
Thank you for reaching out to Pitney Bowes.
I have reviewed your lease agreement for you.
Invoice ********** was for the period Feb 10 2025 - May 09 2025. Termination request came in on 03rd Feb but wasn't terminated until 17th Feb. I will credit invoice ********** and honor the date you requested termination.
Invoice ********** is valid, it is for estimated property tax, your lease is terminated but was active and the equipment in your possession on the lien date 01/01/24. Because Pitney Bowes will pay the jurisdiction after the contract is inactive, an estimate for all open lien dates, based on historical information, is now being invoiced. There will be no future property tax reconciliation. This is the final property tax liability.
Thank you

For the last 45+ years we have used Pitney Bowes postage meters for our family business and have always used pre-paid postage. When we re-filled the postage machine in August Pitney Bowes without our consent or request opened a line of credit purchase power account in our business name and used the credit for the postage amount. When we found out later they had already tacked on finance fees and late fees. Once i found out i paid the amount for the postage we had filled along with a finance fee but requested that they waive additional fees and close out the line of credit immediately as they should never open a $16,000.00 line of credit unprompted and without permission. They have refused to close the account and have continued to add on additional fees. I have made repeated attempts to contact them through phone conversations and support tickets on their website. To which they either inform me they they cannot help and forward me to pay by phone machine or close out the support ticket while not allowing me to respond to their reasoning. I have decided to pay the fees so they stop accruing but am still unable to close the account to ensure this never happens again and my postage is only filled by credit card as a pre-paid postage as we have always done. As a customer of many decades and three generations the borderline criminal conduct and complete lack of customer service by Pitney Bowes has left me no choice but to reconsider this long relationship with their company and their products. Pitney Bowes waived a single late fee however for a line of credit that was opened in our name and without permission this was still not enough. Now that I have paid the total balance to prevent further charges I am requesting that Pitney Bowes issues a refund for all charges not including the postage filled and close out this line of credit.Business Response

$400 was added for postage on August 20, 2024. The Purchase Power statement with this charge generated on September 20, and payment was due on October 17.
A voicemail was left and email sent on November 18 regarding this unpaid balance.
The $41 late fee was waived on November 22. Payment for the postage was not received until December 2.
A case was created to dispute the balance on January 8 and explanation provided that the postage payment was received after the due date and one late fee was waived and no further fees could be waived.
A voicemail was left and email sent on February 19 and March 21 regarding this unpaid balance.
The Purchase Power statement generates around the 20th of each month and a notice of this statement is emailed to ***************************.Customer Answer

Complaint: ********
I am rejecting this response because:I first became aware of the purchase power account on November 18th 2024 through the 1st email that was sent in reference to this line of credit and attempted to pay online 5 times but the online system wouldn’t put the payment through.
So I mailed a check which was deposited on December 2, 2024. check **** for $405.00 for the $400.00 in postage and a singular $5.00 fee.I had made repeated attempts to call Pitney Bowes to have the purchase power account closed and discuss the fees but was never able to speak to anyone. Even when trying to call them back reaching a human agent to speak to was not possible. And the time they did call me and I was able to speak to someone I informed them of the issue and they said they were transferring me to someone who could help they transferred me to the automated bill payment line and I was unable to get someone on the phone again.
My issue is that I had never requested that a purchase power line of credit be opened, for decades we have always pre-paid for postage with the payment method on file. If they had only charged the payment method on file when I funded my machine as they should have there would be no issue.
It is my opinion that since I had never asked for or opened a line of credit, Pitney Bowes should have never done so on my behalf.
I am not contesting the postage itself only the fees that were the result of the line of credit.
As well as the line of credit to be closed out immediately. If Pitney Bowes disagrees with my reasonable request then I would like to request full documentation of the credit agreement and when/how it was activated.
And any documents signed in conjunction with the opening of said credit agreement. As opening a line of credit without full disclosure and acceptance violates the following laws.

I signed up for a free-trial of a postage meter today 2-18-2025. I entered my full shipping address, and set up an online account, and opted for paperless billing. When I received the order confirmation, part of the address was truncated. Also the billing address should be the ** ***. Additionally, I'm not able to log into the online account I set up without an account number... which I'm told can only be found on a bill.. which I'll only be able to access online (CATCH 22.) I called Pitney Bowes about this, and was repeatedly bounced around from department to department. Noone is able to assist, nor even cancel the order and free trial. I need Pitney Bowes to either: A: Get me the account number, and fix the shipping address (missing the State), and add the billing address, right away. OR B: Cancel the order, and the free trial, right away. Their choice.Business Response

Pitney Bows leased equipment to our old office assistant without my signature for approval. They allowed her to put our business name under a contract (that I still have never seen) without the owners approval. Now they are saying we owe thousands of dollars for the stamp machine and they will not give us an address to sent it back. This has been going on for over a year now. We get harassed daily over the phone and by mail. Customer Service does not speak any English nor are they helpful and I have been hung up on numerous times. This is a scam and it’s not ethical. This company needs to be reported and put out of business.Business Response

Hello,
Thank you for contact us.
I have attached a copy of your contract for reference.
This lease agreement did have payments made and the equipment was used, which is further acceptance of the contract.
Your lease agreement #********** has been terminated with Pitney Bowes and the debt has been passed to a third party collections team. You will need to discuss the debt with that company.
Thank you

We signed up with Pitney Bowes in April 2023. We have not had any issues until recently. Over the holidays, we had a lot of promotional mailers sent out and needed to add more funds for postage. The next month they sent us an extra charge for not having enough money on our account. Then they charged us again for having too much funds in our account. When we spoke to them, they said, "it is what it is," and there is nothing they can do about it. We then asked about cancelling the service and they said it would cost $1888.00 to cancel. It turns out the contract is a 5 year lease that was hidden in small prints. When searching for competitors, they charge half the price with no contract. Hopefully this helps anyone else thinking of signing up with them. Run away and find someone else that is fair and honest. We will be transferring to Quadient Mailing Solutions.Business Response

Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Pitney Bowes
I can see you were charged an overage fee and an overlimit fee.
Overage Fee
Your Purchase Power terms and conditions include a monthly postage purchase threshold. If you go over this, an Overage Fee, based on the percentage included in your Purchase Power Terms & Conditions, is assessed on any amount over the threshold during the statement period. This fee covers the cost of borrowing funds beyond the set threshold, and you'll see it on your monthly Line of Credit (Purchase Power) statement.
Overlimit Fee
An Overlimit Fee is incurred when you exceed your total credit limit for your Line of Credit (Purchase Power).
Tip: If you consistently exceed your credit limit, consider applying for a credit limit increase to accommodate your monthly business needs.
There would be a settlement amount to pay if you did want to terminate early as your lease is due to run until 18-JUL-2028.
Thank you

I am rejecting this response because these fees are ridiculous and excessive. We are getting charge for running out of funds and charged for adding more funds. No one else does this and are half the price of your monthly fee. We have used your service for 2 years and have never had a problem. We are still planning on finding a new vendor.

******** *** ******** entered into a new agreement in February 2022 with Pitney Bowes (PB). It was a very simple agreement. I never understood and it was never communicated that PB billed like no other vendor, and we believe their unique, confusing, and entrapping billing programs confused our experienced controller which ended up turning a $600 a month postage bill into what is now over $7000 in late fees and finance charges. The primary examples of the PB's unique, confusing, and entrapping billing programs are 1) PB sent two different bills one for postage and one for the machine. Who ever heard of two bills from one company? 2) PB’s postage bill was billed like a credit card bill with minimum payments which our controller paid thinking that was what was due. Since the controller didn’t understand this was like a Credit card company billing this unique credit card billing practice ended up adding $7,000 in exorbitant late fees and finance charges to our account. No other vendor of ******** *** ******** billed like a credit card company. 3) PB issued a $15,000.00 credit line for a $600.00 a month postage account. I never requested this credit line and this set the trap that my controller unknowing fell into and 4) PB erratic delivery of statements and notifications especially during Covid-19, and on-line statements they rarely saw, ultimately failed to properly alert me of all these ongoing issues. In the end we were billed over $7000 in late fees and finance charges that we don't believe we owe. I would like to add our controller had and continues to have a perfect payment record with all our other vendors, so these issues were solely with and caused by PB. We are a very dissatisfied customer and want PB to credit all of the finance charges and late fees caused by the PB's unique, confusing, and entrapping billing programs. We hope the BBB can assist our small company in resolving this dispute. Thank you for any assistance you can provide.Business Response

The Purchase Power line of credit is set up for automatic payments of the minimum balance due. This was done using the email address ********************** on 2/28/2022. If you prefer to prepay for postage you are able to do that instead of using the line of credit. If the Purchase Power amount due is not paid in full each month there are finance charges added to the balance.Customer Answer

I am rejecting this response because:1. I believe that adding fees against an autopay account is unethical.
2. I never requested a credit line.
3. I never requested a credit line increase.
4. The credit was extended beyond my current credit line in a tactic to add additional fees.
5. This deceptive business practice has been experienced by others who worked with the BBB and these business practices need to stop as it should not be a goal for a company to extort their customers.
6. The intent of my controller was not to sign up for minimum payment only.

The Pitney Bowes website offers the minimum payment due or full payment option when setting up automatic payments. This can be changed anytime and this minimum payment notification is displayed on the website in the Autopay settings. The minimum amount due and full amount due is also listed on the Purchase Power statement.Customer Answer

I had a contract with Pitney Bowes for a postage machine. The contract was to expire in April 2025. However, a few months ago, the postage machine died. When I requested a new one, they sent me a machine that was still logged into another person's account (which happened to be the *** ********* ****** ********** ******). They refused to send a new, working machine. I was billed for the return of both the broken machine and the *** ********* machine and billed for 2023 property taxes, which are exempt in the State of *********. I do not believe I should have to pay $43.99 for the property taxes or $79.13 for the return of the machines. My contract was also paid in full through April, and there was no refund for the prepaid contract fees, either.Business Response

********** ********
I am rejecting this response because: there never was an invoice ********* for $90.90. I cannot figure out what that would be for. Further, we did pay invoice ********** for the period of 1/30/25 to 4/29/25 for $184.36 on 1/7/25, and nothing was refunded. Our machine stopped working on January 17, which was reported immediately, and prior to beginning the new lease period on 1/30. I cannot reach a person on the 1-800 number to discuss the issue. Finally, the overpayment on invoice ********** should cover the $79.13 for returning the broken machine and ** ****** ******** machine, especially because we were never provided with a working machine. Therefore, if Pitney Bowes would like the $79.13 payment, then they need to refund $184.36.

I am filing this complaint against Pitney Bowes due to deceptive business practices, lack of transparency, and refusal to cancel services. Despite repeated attempts via email, chat, and phone, my requests have been ignored, and I have been trapped in a cycle of forced billing. I requested cancellation 4 months ago and was told to pay a balance first. I paid, yet my request was ignored. Instead, I received another bill and was again told I couldn’t cancel until it was paid. I was also told theres no charge in canceling. Please see the attached documentation for proof. All exchanges by me were respectful. Pitney Bowes now claims we are under contract until 2027, yet neither I nor the company owner signed such an agreement. A former employee without authorization allegedly signed it. Pitney Bowes expects their clients to uphold the contract, when they can't even uphold their end of the contract since their promised customer service is non existent. I requested an itemized invoice for the $1,400 balance, but only received vague statements with no breakdown of charges. Even their representatives couldn’t explain it. I finally got an excel sheet of charges, which I then sent a question in response and got ignored. Reminded again, got ignored again. It's not been over a week. Emails are ignored, calls lead to automated responses, and chat support is unhelpful. The only way I reached a human was through a Reddit loophole. When I finally spoke to someone, they hung up. A supervisor promised to call but never did. I then emailed to remind, no response. Finally got a call the next day after calling and emailing to remind. Every time I meet their conditions to cancel, they generate another charge and refuse cancellation. This endless cycle forces businesses to keep paying for unwanted services. I need immediate cancellation of all services and written confirmation. Pitney Bowes’ unethical business model must be addressed to prevent further harm to others.Business Response

I initiated a contract termination with Pitney Bowes for our business. We have two postage meters, and having recently consolidated our offices from two locations into one location, we no longer need two postage meters. Our current contract has 13 months remaining at $162.78 per quarter payments, with no balance due other than the quarterly payments. We were given a settlement agreement of $3,588.44 and when I contacted Pitney Bowes to ask for a breakdown of the fees I was told "unfortunately we won't be able to provide you the breakdown of the Settlement Quote. But Settlement consists of current balance owed, the remaining contractual obligation, plus early termination fee." I asked the agent to help me understand what the termination fee is based on and was told 'Settlement Quote is a system generated that's why we are unable to provide the breakdown. Termination fee is assessed for early cancellation. If there are no balances on the account, it includes the remaining payments of your Lease, early cancellation fee and the restocking fee of the meter.'. I asked what the restocking fee was I was told 'The restoking fee is intended to cover the costs of processing the return, including restocking, and inspecting the item.' I asked a second time what the restocking fee was and was told 'we don't have the breakdown for that. Settlement Quote us a system generated.' I asked for a contact person to escalate the case to get better information and was told 'What we can tell you is that what the Settlement consist of but we are not able to provide the breakdown charges. Like I mentioned earlier, for early cancellation, we will create a settlement quote, it includes the remaining payments of your Lease, early cancellation fee and the restocking fee of the meter.' I asked again for a telephone number I could call and was told 'you can contact us at ###-###-#### but to set an expectation, they will be providing the same information.' I need a breakdown of the fees.Business Response
